Market in Antigua, Guatemala – Food
Markets in Central America are filled with fresh produce and an assortment of delicious foods being prepared, and the one in Antigua, Guatemala is no exception. Right on the edge of the ‘tourist’ part of town, the market attracts Antiguenyos as wells as people that live in nearby towns and tourists alike. It’s an unmissable experience to get in there amongst the thick of it in order to load up on fruits, vegetables, spices and whatever else you require to make your favourite dish. Markets are also a great way to support the locals, instead of spending your dollars at the corporate owned supermarket. You’ll often find eager shop owners down for a friendly chat to go along with your sack of exotic fruits.

I love shopping at local markets. Love the photos too!

That would be food haven for me. I am a vegetarian by necessity because I can’t cook (will eat meat in a restaurant), so I won’t starve in Guatemala. Mouth watering pictures too.

Markets fascinate me. With the whole range of meats, vegetables, fruits and prepared food laid out you can get a great feel for a culture because food is fundamental to everybody’s living modes. Not only that, the volume on display and the degree of trading frenzy indicates the general state of any economy. In Ethiopia last August, the markets were overflowing, many flocks of sheep and herds of animals, all in prime condition being traded .
And yet news media would have us believe people starve there.

Ahhh, markets are one of my favorite parts of travel. We love watching Anthony Bourdain, and one of his tips that he always talks about on his show is to visit the local markets first thing to get a feel for the city/town. I think this is great advice, and we adhere to it often. Strolling around local markets is fantastic, and great photo opportunities abound, as evidenced by your fantastic photos of this particular market.

I could spend hours just wandering around markets like this, looking at the people, tasting all the different foods, a culture so different from the one I live in.
